Job Purpose

Serves as Post Doctoral Scientist or Research Assistant at the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research / Research institute of Medical and Health Sciences / University of Sharjah.  He/she is expected to plan and execute quality research work related to the main theme “Identification and translation of novel protein biomarkers for Non-Communicable Disease diagnosis and drug treatment”.  The applicant will employ high resolution mass spectrometry techniques to identify and validate novel protein biomarkers for early diagnosis and monitor drug treatment of prevalent UAE non-communicable diseases (e.g. cancer, diabetes, obesity and cardiometabolic disorders). Expertise in protein sample handling (e.g. protein extraction from biological fluids and tissue samples; protein quantification; tryptic digestion in solution/FASP), demonstrated experience in liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), quantitative proteomics, large scale data analysis using processing/bioinformatics tool such as Maxquant, Perseus, Skyline and others. Direct experience in targeted protein quantitative mass spectrometry-based assays and experience in metabolomics/lipidomics/ MALDI-imaging will be an advantage.      

Main accountabilities & expectations
Major Responsibilities

Design and execute research components within the framework of the major projects at the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research. The applicant will also assist in supervising Research assistants and graduate students in the group.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Design and implementation of mass spectrometry- based research project aim to discovery of novel disease biomarkers
  • Develop and optimize sample preparation workflows
  • Data collation, analysis and interpretation
  • Execute the main bulk of the experimental research work in the lab
  • Use, maintain and troubleshooting of high resolution mass spectrometer instruments and related equipment available at SIMR that are essential for his/her work
  • Get the necessary training to use new equipment needed for his/her work.
  • Organize and present his/her data to the group leader(s) on regular basis
  • Assist in data analysis and design of future projects, participate in writing up of proposals and/or publications.
  • Supervise and guide nominated technicians working under his/her supervision.
  • Supervise and guide other technicians and undergraduate and graduate students in the research group.
  • Manage emergency situation according to the standard lab protocols
  • Assist in administrative tasks, preparation of applications, reports and presentations related to his/her projects and/or other related tasks
  • Contribute to Research activity at SIMR.

Preferred Qualification & Experience

Research assistant- should have at least five years of experience in Proteomics/Mass spectrometry and 4-5 publications in the field in top journals. Postdoctoral- PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Cancer biology, or related fields with at least 2-3 years of postdoctoral training in a well-established international institute and more than 5 original research papers in the field, in high quality journals in the field of Proteomics and preferably in proteomics-based biomarkers.
