Job Purpose

To provide relevant and accessible learning resources and information services in order to support the students, faculty and staff at the University of Sharjah in developing academic assignments, research projects, and teaching material.

Main accountabilities & expectations
  1. Plan, organize and present the Library print, electronic and audio-visual collections and assesses the effectiveness to ensure accessible learning resources for Library users.
  2. Help users by assisting them in searching and locating required information from various sources to fulfil their needs and train them to locate required information and books needed.
  3. Keep the Library database updated through acquiring new materials to keep the reference collection current and up to date, and removes out dated or unused materials.
  4. Respond to students, faculty and staff enquiries by determining the required information and searching through standard reference materials to support educational activities, assignments and research.
  5. Manage the checkout process for books and other resources at the library, and follow up on late and overdue returns.
  6. Undertake the preparation, collation and display of learning resource materials as well as maintain records of items received, stored, issued, returned, and file catalog cards according to system used.
  7. Meet the requirements of users by coordinating with the acquisitions team to ensure required materials are available for Library users.
  8. Ensure that library services meet the needs of particular groups of users (e.g. faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students).
  9. Follow University of Sharjah's library standards and guidelines at all times.
  10. Assist in promoting the Library services to the University community such as assisting in the preparation and publication of the Library's newsletter, in order to attract students, faculty and staff to utilize the Library's many recourses.
  11. Prepare various reports, lists, and statistics related to The Library when requested by the line manager.
  12. Complete any other job-related tasks as assigned by line manager within the expected time limit.

Required Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Excellent knowledge of the library's classification system.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Thorough understanding of standard library techniques and technical services procedures.
  • Good knowledge of the publishing industry and knowledge of publishing in all formats.
  • Time management skills.
  • Organization skills.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise multiple tasks and produce reports under strict guidelines.
  • High integrity and openness combined with commitment to good governance.
  • Inquisitive mind and passion for excellence.
  • Flexibility and ability to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in MS office applications.

Preferred Qualification & Experience

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in Library Science, Library Administration, Library Information Systems, or a relevant discipline.
  • 2-3 years of UAE experience in similar role preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Priority is to UAE Nationals.
