Job Purpose

The Research Institute of Sciences and Engineering (RISE) has an opening for a full-time research assistant in Bioinformatics. The successful candidate will be responsible for writing and managing code for lab projects, ranging from simulating high throughput genomic data (NGS and Microarray) to bioinformatics and analysis including statistics and gene ontology enrichment.  The Research Assistant, under the supervision of Principal Investigator and/or research scientist executes several tasks such as programming and implementing bioinformatics pipeline, testing and validating new tools and running pilot analysis. The Research Assistant also will execute several tasks such as NGS data analysis especially variants annotation and development of biological databases.

Main accountabilities & expectations
  • Programming and implementing bioinformatics pipeline
  • Testing and validating new tools
  • Running pilot analysis.
  • Performing advanced analysis of OMICs data especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)
  • Develop private and public biological databases
  • Conducts bioinformatics and biostatistics analysis on OMICs data
  • Perform Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and computer modeling of biological systems and processes
  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues


  • Be able to conduct regular check on all material, equipment and supplies

  • Be able to report on any damages of any of the material, equipment and any incident in the laboratories

  • Be willing to contribute to any additional work assigned by his coordinator or and other PI of the group.

Preferred Qualification & Experience

  1. MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, Computer Sciences or related field.
  2. Experience in research and/or academic settings (assessed through published articles in the field of bioinformatics).

Job Location University of Sharjah (Main)

  1. Programming skills: R, Python, or other related programming knowledge.
  2. Familiarized with biological Data: DNA, RNA and protein sequences, expression and structures and molecular biology mechanisms.
  3. Experience in analyzing next-generation sequencing data
  4. Databases: MySQL, Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL or Oracle.
  5. Familiarized with system biology tools.
  6. Excellent organizational and documentation skills
  1. Able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
