Job Purpose

The Research Institute of Sciences & Engineering (RISE) is recruiting a qualified individual for a postdoctoral appointment in radio astronomy. The position is based in the Radio Astronomy Research Group in RISE.  The research group is supported by the Radio Astronomy Laboratory, which has a broad research portfolio and is located in the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST). Key research topics focus on investigating AGN, GRS (Giant Radio Sources), Sun's observations, Jupiter observation, and Hydrogen line observation. The SAASST Radio Astronomy Laboratory operates two main systems: (1) A Decametric Radio Array that works at 20 MHz, and (2) a 40-m Radio Interferometer that works at 1.4 GHz. We are looking for an individual to join the radio research group as a postdoctoral researcher. Technical mastery of radio interferometry techniques is a must, as well as a good publication record.  A candidate with complementary skills to our research portfolio is especially encouraged to apply.   The appointee will be expected to help build a 1-km radio interferometer and collaborate closely with other researchers.  

Main accountabilities & expectations
  • Assist the research assistants at the radio astronomy laboratory in their radio observations.
  • Supervise the building of a 1-km radio interferometer.
  • Run the interferometer and collect data.
  • Start a thorough observing program using the 1-km radio interferometer and develop new lines of research.
  • Train research assistants/graduate students.
  • Publish research results and present them in conferences and meetings.
  • Follow all university policies and regulations for safe working procedures.
  • Perform other relevant duties as requested by the director of the radio astronomy laboratory

Preferred Qualification & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Astronomy/Astrophysics or related areas.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with radio interferometer.
  • Journal publications and experience in radio data reduction.
  • Deep knowledge of the techniques of radio telescopes.

Job Location University of Sharjah (Main)
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed international journals related to radio astronomy using radio interferometers.
  • Knowledge of AIPS++ / CASA and other applications for radio data reduction.
  • Good communication and presentation skills in English.
