Job Purpose

​The Sharjah Institute for Medical Research (SIMR) at the University of Sharjah, UAE, is currently recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Iron Biology Research Group. Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. degree in a biological-sciences-related field. Should provide evidence of scholarly productivity, and expertise in the following earned during a doctoral degree program: in vivo cancer animal models, cell culture, in vitro carcinogenic assays, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and other molecular and cell biology techniques. We are interested in passionate, energetic, and self-motivated candidates who ask fundamentally important questions and take innovative approaches. Candidates having experience with high-throughput biology, CRISPR or RNA interference, and bioinformatics in silico analysis will be preferred. The primary research theme of Iron Biology Research Group is to understand the role of iron metabolism in complex diseases such as cancer and diabetes to identify biomarkers and pathways that can be of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic value. Our dynamic group focuses on the following objectives by combining animal models with high-throughput transcriptomic/proteomics approaches, bioinformatics/modeling tools, and clinical sample analyses. 

• To study estrogen-dependent epigenetic re-programming in liver, colorectal, and breast cancers. 

• Investigate the role of iron-metabolism-related genes in cancer growth, metastasis and treatment. 

• Safety and efficacy profiling of anti-cancer drug candidates that disrupt cellular iron metabolism.

Main accountabilities & expectations

1. Manage the day to day running of the Iron Biology research group laboratory 

2. Manage the ordering, stock taking, and budget for the group 

3. Generate ideas for a new project and assist in writing and obtaining research grants 

4. Supervise and help graduate students working in the research group 

5. Assist in research projects assigned to him/her by the group coordinator​

​• Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field

Competencies

​• In-depth knowledge of molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and techniques such as PCR, immunoblotting, flow cytometry testing and analysis, and confocal microscopy.

• Experience with animal handling and establishing animal models such as tumor-bearing animals and xenograft mice models. 

• In addition to an outstanding publication record, the candidate should have at least two firstauthor original articles recently published/accepted in high-impact journals. 

• Excellent communication with a focus on teamwork is required. 

• Be responsible for the design and execution of experimental work, data analysis and their written records. Hence, be expected to publish data in top scientific journals
