Job Purpose

To be responsible for maintaining a wide range of laboratory equipment and utilities at the Central Laboratories, in order to ensure that lab sessions are uninterrupted, as well as support the maintenance team to follow up and resolve specific technical tasks.

Main accountabilities & expectations
  1. Attend to laboratory equipment/machine breakdown concerns with electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and PLC based machines. Diagnoses problems and determines corrective solutions, referring to and/or adhering to equipment codes, blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  2. Follow a predetermined schedule of Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) and perform periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  3. Ensure appropriate levels of consumable materials and spare parts; order, inventory and control materials as necessary.
  4. Assist in setting laboratory equipment PPM appointments, providing reminders and follow-up with service providers and lab in-charge.
  5. Attend installation, commissioning and training for the new equipment as per the schedule arranged by the CLD-MT Engineer. Maintain working knowledge of the new machines to be installed by reading the installation manual and prepare the necessary documents required for installation.
  6. Ensure safe and proper usage of hand tools, power tools & testing instruments  while carrying out repairs, keep the work area clear before/after or middle of the job as per the prescribe safety standard.
  7. Implement the Standard Operation Procedures and Practices (SOPP), Standard Maintenance procedures and Practices (SMPP) and ensures that the Maintenance, Philosophies, Policies, procedures and Interests of the University of Sharjah & CLD are upheld and protected at all times.
  8. Follow up with the service providers regarding any maintenance concerns that require technical specialties.
  9. Prepare the installation site as per the instrument electrical and utilities requirements (when required).
  10. Coordinate with Colleges/Department on relevant matters pertaining to service request.
  11. Integrate basic continuous improvement concepts and techniques for both process and equipment. Communicates with engineers and technical staff to provide suggestions for new equipment, processes, and forms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.
  12. Ensure that all the assignments are carried out in a timely manner by using necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE's) and as per the set safety norms.

Job Specific Accountabilities --
Required Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Good laboratory management including knowledge of basic lab principles and applications as well as methods, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of operating the required software/hardware
  • Able to understand the meaning of common error messages and explain them to users in simple language.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise multiple tasks and produce reports under strict guidelines.
  • High integrity and openness combined with commitment to good governance
  • Use technical knowledge to help and assist users overcome any difficulties.
  • Flexibility and ability to function effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualification & Experience

  • Minimum of diploma associate degree or other postsecondary training in Engineering, Automation or Instrumentation Technology.
  • 2-4 years of UAE experience in similar role preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Priority is to UAE Nationals.
