Job Purpose
|
The College of Communication at the University of Sharjah invites applications for the Assistant/Associate Professor position in Visual Culture/Television, Cinema, and Film Studies (Theory and Practice) starting in
September 2023.
|
Main accountabilities & expectations
|
- The new faculty member will have the rounded skills and knowledge required to teach practice and
theory in or closely related to Visual Culture/Television, Cinema, and Film Studies for the university's
graduate and undergraduate students.
- Visual Culture/Television, Cinema, and Film Studies Conducting first-class research to have it
published in peer-reviewed journals of a high standard.
- Building connections with the industry to assist with the college's internship and graduate projects.
- Collaborating with the college's different departments and programs as well as relevant programs at
other colleges in the university.
- Collaborating with the industry and building relations with the institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah
and the larger the United Arab Emirates.
- Continuously improving programs, courses, and syllabuses.
- Possible areas of research and teaching include but are not limited to the following clusters: *Visual Culture *Cinema Arts *Film & Media Studies *Digital media *Documentary film *Film & Television Production Arts (Practical Experience) are highly desirable.

Preferred Qualification & Experience
|
- Completion of their PhD by the time of the appointment.
- At least two years of teaching experience at a Higher Education Institution. However, exceptions will
be made for promising young academics who recently completed their Ph.D. as long as they
demonstrate Scopus publications.
- Record or strong demonstrable potential for successfully pursuing grants and funding in support of
engaged scholarship.
- Excellent speaking, writing, presentation, and communication skills.
- Scholarly publications in areas related to the job description.
- Qualified candidates who can teach in English and Arabic will be prioritized.
- Scholars who can teach both theory and practice will be prioritized.
- Candidates who can teach theory and practice.

Competencies
|
- Strong research record and agenda. Publications in Scopus according to years from Ph.D. completion
(on average, should be two, but exceptions will be made for young scholars).
- An outstanding creative practice record in Film editing or Television and film production is highly
desirable.
- Demonstrable expertise in the areas signaled above using the topic of their Ph.D. or their research
track record. In other words, we are open to academics with diverse backgrounds as long as they can
demonstrate their specialism in one of the abovementioned areas.
- Demonstrable ability to advise and supervise master and doctoral students and serve at the
department, college, university, and professional levels.
- Demonstrable ability to apply and secure funding for research and scholarship.
- The ability how to solve problems is required, besides organizational skills.
- Analytical thinking is a competence the University of Sharjah highly values, besides adaptability and
teamwork.
- The ability to take decisions and lead committees and groups is necessary.
