Job Purpose

We invite applications for the role of Assistant Professor in the Department of History and Islamic Civilization, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, at the University of Sharjah.

The appointee should be able to support the Department of History and Islamic Civilization to capitalise on the significant progress it has made so far and contribute to the academic life of the University of Sharjah, nationally and internationally. The appointee(s) should be able to enrich the Department's research agenda, expand its teaching programs, and undertake graduate supervision.

Applications are sought from eminent candidates who can enhance the Department's research, education, and societal impact within the field of Tourism Guidance and tourism management.

Research and teaching in the Department are methodologically and theoretically diverse, and we expect candidates to be able and willing to engage in intellectual exchanges across a range of tourism guidance topics within the discipline.

Main accountabilities & expectations

The Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching in the field of specialization in both Arabic and English.
  • Academic advising for students.
  • Conducting scientific research in the field of specialization.
  • Contributing to the activities and committees of the department.
  • Supporting the activities that serve the university and the community.
  • Contributing to the efforts of academic accreditation and quality concerns.
Required Skills
  • Ability to develop and  lead high-quality research.
  • Good skills in using computers.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English languages (speaking and writing).
  • Experience in teaching in the English language.
Desirable Requirements
  1. PhD in specialization (Tourism & tourism guidance) from one of the recognized universities. 
  2. Experience in university teaching in the field of specialization.
  3. Published in high quality refereed journals in the speciality in SCOPUS Q1.
  4. Good knowledge of academic accreditation requirements and procedures.

In addition to the above-required qualifications, selection criteria include the general duties attached to the position:

  1. Providing an ongoing high level of personal commitment to, and achievement in, a particular scholarly area.
  2. Conducting research and assisting with the development of research policy in the department.
  3. Fostering the research groups and individuals within the Department, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
  4. Contributing to teaching, including developing courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and the delivery of lectures.
  5. Acting as Advisor to students in the undergraduate programs, and research students.
  6. Supervising research students (i.e., Master's Degree and PhD)
  7. Other duties as required, consistent with the classification for this position.
