Sign Language Interpreter

Job Purpose
Providing support services to deaf people through professional sign language interpretation.  
Main accountabilities & expectations
  1. Engaging in full communication with the deaf using all aspects of the sign language.
  2. Simultaneous conversion of spoken words to intelligible sign terms; expressing several meanings using one sign term; and using sign symbols to convey the meaning of the words that do not have sign symbols.
  3. Simultaneous conversion of sign terms and gestures made by deaf people into intelligible and correct spoken words.
  4. Conveying statements, discussions and interpretations given by several people in a hall correctly to deaf people.
  5. Delivering sign language interpretation services in classrooms, during examinations and all educational and instructional programs, activities and events.
  6. Preparing for lectures in advance and making a summary of each lecture.
  7. Appointing office hours for deaf people in order to provide them with academic support services.
  8. Training deaf people on steps of preparing reports and research papers and methods of research and presentation.
  9. Training deaf people and individuals of the University and the community on using and interpreting the sign language
  10. Submitting regular reports identifying the challenges and needs of the deaf people and following up such reports.
  11. Observing the professional standards applicable by the University and the Center.
  12. Observing confidentiality and adhering to applicable regulations and bylaws.
  13. Safeguarding the Center's assets.
  14. Performing any other duties assigned by the Director of the Centre and the immediate supervisor within the scope of the interpreter's specialization and for the public interest.
 
Required Skills
Desirable Requirements  
       
  1. Priority for UAE nationals.
  2. A Bachelor degree (a master's degree is preferred).
  3. A license to practice sign language interpretation.
  4. A certificate in sign language interpreting
  5. 3-year experience as a sign language interpreter
