Job Purpose

The Research Institute of Sciences and Engineering seeks a Lab Engineer for the GIS and Remote Sensing center.  The Lab Engineer will be involved in research activates and carry out other duties critical to maintaining and managing the unit's computer technological infrastructure (including hardware, software, and network ports). Research activities focus on geospatial analysis, modeling and processing remotely sensed imagery for mapping and monitoring of land use and environment. The successful candidate will have knowledge of land-use/land-cover change dynamics, water resources and environmental management, urban and transportation planning, natural hazards and environmental risk assessment. The position requires advanced experience for obtaining and processing a broad range of geospatial data, using a variety of software and geospatial tools and approaches, and the ability to manipulate large datasets and manage databases. The successful candidate must be highly motivated, show initiative, have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and possess the ability to continuously learn new technical skills as needed.

Main accountabilities & expectations

With respect to the management of general computer infrastructure and technology needs, the position is responsible for:

  • Managing computer software licensing, contractual agreements/purchases,
  • Managing inventory for computer/remote sensing equipment in the Center,
  • Assessing Internet port usage & manage network,
  • Inventorying existing technology and identifying technology needs.


With respect to the Research Activates

  • Organize and manage extensive spatial databases, and support and lead efforts to mapping and Spatial modeling,
  • Prepare data for and carry out a variety of spatial analyses in collaboration with staff scientists,
  • Acquire and process geospatial datasets from multiple sources, including pre-processing and analyzing satellite imagery (from multiple sources, but especially Landsat and MODIS sensors),
  • Assist in developing and writing proposals, manuscripts, presentations, etc.

Required Qualifications and Skills:


  • A bachelor degree in geoscience/Geomatics engineering, (with GIS and remote sensing focus).
  • At least three years in similar position.
  • Thorough knowledge of general computer hardware (e.g., workstation, server) and software, familiar with Microsoft product, GIS and remote sensing software.
  • Geospatial database management skills and discipline-specific experience necessary for installing, configuring, updating, and trouble-shooting software platforms related to GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, Geo-visualization, Transportation and Environmental Modelling.
  • Ability to make informed recommendations on technology upgrades, new adoptions, purchases, and surplus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to write articulate and exact documentation.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with faculty, students, staff, and OIT.
  • Capable of training and supervising student workers in lab setting.
  • Organizational skills necessary for constructing schedules, inventorying equipment, and prioritizing work requests.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Master degree in geoscience/Geomatics engineering, (with GIS and remote sensing focus). and/or with computer-related educational and software certificates.
  • Five years in similar position(s).
  • Demonstrated experience and success in coordinating GIS/Remote Sensing/Geospatial labs, particularly in university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in maintaining, evaluating, and trouble-shooting the performance of computer hardware, software, and Internet ports
  • Familiarity with the research and teaching needs of faculty, particularly in GIS and Remote sensing.
