The University of Sharjah (UoS) in the United Arab Emirates is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of Director of the Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS), with an anticipated start in the Academic Year 2025-2026.

RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES (RIHSS) PROFILE
Established in September 2014, RIHSS aims to position UoS as a hub for humanities and social sciences research and innovation in the UAE and the region. The institute facilitates, supports, and strengthens the research and training needs of UoS researchers, students, and stakeholders by promoting quality research and innovation in priority science and engineering areas aligned with the sustainable development needs of Sharjah, the UAE, and the region.
RIHSS oversees various research entities and activities, including research centers and groups, student research projects, graduate research assistantships, exchange research activities, internships, faculty research projects, professional activities, community services, and research agreements with local, regional, and international entities. The institute currently houses three research centers, namely: Center for Family and Child Studies, Center for Applied Sociology Studies and Sharjah Center for Public Opinion Polls. These centers house research groups in key areas of humanities, social sciences, business, law, linguistics and sharia and islamic studies.
CITY OF SHARJAH
Sharjah, the third-largest city in the UAE, is renowned as its cultural capital. Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder and first President of the University of Sharjah, the city has received numerous accolades from UNESCO, including World Book Capital (2016), Islamic Cultural Capital (2014), and Arab World Cultural Capital (1998).
SCOPE OF WORK
The Director of RIHSS reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies. The Director is responsible for leading, administering, and coordinating all research, educational, and training activities within RIHSS. This role involves developing strategic directions in collaboration with faculty, initiating and advancing research initiatives, and integrating activities within the socio-cultural framework to serve the scientific and technological advancement needs of the UAE and the region.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of RIHSS is expected to:
- Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the university's mission and vision, positioning RIHSS as a leader in humanities and social sciences research.
- Oversee the planning, funding, management, and monitoring of research entities, projects, and activities related to humanities, social sciences, art, linguistics, business, law and islamic studies.
- Foster collaborations with local, regional, and international entities to enhance research opportunities and funding prospects.
- Manage the institute's resources effectively, including budgeting, staffing, and infrastructure, to ensure the successful execution of research initiatives.
- Mentor faculty, researchers, and students, promoting a culture of excellence, innovation, and ethical research practices.
- Engage with the community to promote the institute's research outcomes and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate should possess:
- A terminal academic degree (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant humanities or social sciences discipline and the rank of full professor.
- Significant experience in a senior academic leadership position, with a proven track record of managing research programs and securing funding.
- A distinguished record of research achievements, including publications in high-impact journals, patents, or technology transfers.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans that advance the institute's mission and goals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- An understanding of the socio-cultural context of the UAE and the region, with a commitment to contributing to its development.
