Job Purpose

​​ ​As a Fablab Officer at the University, you are expected to manage and operate the University FabLab, ensuring the safe use and regular maintenance of advanced digital fabrication equipment. You will be responsible for delivering hands-on training, supporting prototyping and innovation projects, and coordinating activities that promote entrepreneurship, applied research, and interdisciplinary learning. This role plays a key part in advancing the university’s Strategy 2030 (EDGE framework) by fostering innovation, empowering graduates, and enhancing industry engagement through practical learning experiences and startup development.​

Main accountabilities & expectations

  • Train and certify users (students, staff, faculty, interns, and volunteers) on FabLab tools, digital fabrication software, electronics, and safety procedures.
  • Support academic courses and R&D activities that integrate FabLab technologies, in collaboration with faculty and project teams.
  • Guide innovation projects from ideation to prototyping, including concept development, DFM, rapid iteration, and user testing.
  • Promote project-based learning and design thinking methodologies to foster entrepreneurship and creative problem-solving.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration on innovation sprints, hackathons, and capstone projects.

  • Engage with industry and community partners to expand outreach and joint initiatives.

Required Skills

​1.Digital Fabrication Equipment (Operation & Troubleshooting)
Hands-on experience with a wide range of machines, including:

  • CNC Routers (e.g., HM 2158)

  • 3D Printers (FDM and SLA)

  • Laser Cutters (e.g., Universal Laser Systems)

  • Vinyl Cutters and Plotters

  • Vacuum Formers (e.g., Formech 508FS)

  • Waterjet Cutters

  • Styrocut Machines

  • CNC Milling Machines (e.g., Denford, Roland SRM-20)

  • Robotic Arms (e.g., Dobot, Universal Robotics)

2. Software Proficiency
Skilled in design and fabrication software tools:

  • CAD/CAM: Fusion 360, SolidWorks, AutoCAD

  • Vector Editing/Laser Cutting: CorelDRAW, Illustrator, RDWorks

  • 3D Printing: Cura, PrusaSlicer

  • File preparation (STL, DXF, G-code) and workflow integration

3. Electronics & Programming

  • Familiar with basic electronics integration and microcontroller programming

  • Platforms: Arduino, Raspberry Pi

4. Safety & Maintenance

  • Knowledge of lab safety protocols and equipment handling best practices

  • Conducts regular preventive maintenance and machine calibration

  • Ability to perform risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety standards​

Desirable Requirements

  • Educational background in Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related discipline.
  • Completion of the Fab Academy Diploma or equivalent digital fabrication training is strongly preferred.
  • Additional certifications in digital fabrication, product design, or innovation management are considered an asset.

  • English language proficiency, preferably IELTS 5.5 or higher.

  • Safety and equipment-specific certifications, such as CNC operation, laser cutting, or 3D printing, are preferred.​
