Job Purpose

The Research Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (RIMHS) is seeking to hire a Bioinformatics postdoctoral research associate. The successful candidate will be responsible for writing and managing code for various projects, ranging from simulating high throughput genomic data (NGS and Microarray) to analyzing OMICs data (genomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, metabolomics and proteomics) generated by teams in the institute and from publicly available biological databases. The Post Doc, under the supervision of Principal Investigator and/or research scientist executes several tasks such as programming and implementing bioinformatics pipeline, testing and validating new tools and running pilot analysis. The Post Doc will also execute several tasks such as NGS and proteomics data analysis especially variants annotation and development of biological databases. Hands on experience evidenced by educational background and publications in leading journals is necessary. Transcripts must be submitted along the CV in one document.​

Main accountabilities & expectations

  • Programming and implementation of bioinformatics pipeline for genomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, metabolomics and proteomics
  • Testing and validating new computational and bioinformatics tools
  • Running pilot analysis
  • Performing advanced analysis of OMICs data especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and proteomics
  • Develop private and public biological genomic and proteomic databases
  • Conducts bioinformatics analysis on genomics data
  • Design and development of bioinformatics LIMS system to book and track bioinformatics projects
  • Construct GitHub and maintain the code in GitHub
  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues​

Required Skills

  • Proficient in programming languages: R (Bioconductor, Shiny), Python (TensorFlow, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Keras, PyTorch), Perl, C/C++, Java, Visual BASIC, PHP, or equivalent.

  • Strong understanding of biological data: DNA, RNA, protein sequences, expression, and structures.

  • Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis.

  • Skilled in relational databases and query languages: MySQL, Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, Oracle.

  • Experience in developing biological databases (private or public).

  • Familiarity with major biological data banks: NCBI, EMBL-EBI, Ensembl, KEGG, ENCODE.​

Desirable Requirements
  • ​Educational background in biomedical science with at least 3 years of experience in software engineering OR PhD in Engineering/Computing/Physical science with at least 1 year experience in bioinformatics demonstrated by a publication of at least one article in the field of bioinformatics
  • Experience with UNIX/Linux environments.

  • Knowledge of dynamic web development (HTML5, JavaScript).

  • Familiarity with statistical modeling and mathematical tools, e.g., Bayesian statistics, Markov models, simulation models.​
