Laboratory Support Engineer - Civil

Job Purpose

​As a Laboratory Support Engineer you are requsted to primarily support laboratory-based courses and students' practical learning across CEE laboratories by preparing and demonstrating experiments, guiding students, ensuring safe equipment use, and supporting course outcomes in coordination with faculty members.

The role also includes operating advanced laboratory equipment; following up on calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and service needs; and supporting senior design, research, approved testing, safety, documentation, inventory, procurement, consumables, and overall laboratory operations.​


Main accountabilities & expectations


    • Prepare, set up, demonstrate, and supervise CEE laboratory sessions, including pre-lab readiness, safety briefing, PPE compliance, attendance, data sheets, and student guidance.
    • Support students' practical learning, safe equipment use, and achievement of course-related laboratory outcomes in coordination with faculty members.
    • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain readiness of CEE laboratory equipment, including advanced/high-tech systems; coordinate calibration, preventive maintenance, service visits, spare parts, and user training.
    • Prepare materials, samples, specimens, tools, consumables, and testing arrangements for teaching, senior design, research, and approved testing services.
    • Support laboratory testing, particularly materials and soil/geotechnical testing where applicable, in line with course requirements, SOPs, relevant standards, and faculty direction.
    • Maintain technical records, equipment logs, calibration/maintenance records, SOPs, risk assessments, inventory, procurement/consumables records, housekeeping, waste segregation, safety compliance, and continuous improvement.
    • Prepare, demonstrate, and supervise student-centered practical experiments across CEE laboratories.
    • Perform, support, and verify CEE laboratory tests under standards, SOPs, and faculty instructions; materials and soil/geotechnical testing competence is essential.
    • Operate and troubleshoot CEE laboratory equipment, follow up calibration/maintenance, maintain data integrity, traceability, records, reports, and apply HSE/PPE/SDS/risk controls.
    • Communicate clearly with students, faculty, researchers, laboratory staff, university units, suppliers, service providers, and laboratory users.
    • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate teaching, research, maintenance, calibration, procurement, and equipment-readiness needs.
    • Exercise professional judgment, accountability, confidentiality, respectful student guidance, and flexible cross-coverage across CEE laboratories.
    • Reliable, proactive, organized, accurate, safety-conscious, ethical, calm under pressure, student-centered, research-supportive, and adaptable across CEE laboratory environments.
    • The role supervises students, senior design teams, researchers, and laboratory users during scheduled activities.
    • The role is on-site and requires PPE use and safe handling of construction materials, soil samples, specimens, equipment, and approved laboratory substances.

Required Skills
  • Practical experience in materials testing and soil/geotechnical testing is essential; exposure to other CEE labs is an advantage.
  • Experience supporting undergraduate labs, senior design, student/postgraduate research, faculty experimentation, and equipment readiness.
  • Experience in equipment operation, troubleshooting, calibration/maintenance follow-up, HSE, QA/QC, inventory, procurement, consumables, and service coordination is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills in English; Arabic is an advantage.
  • Ability to prepare, demonstrate, supervise, and support practical experiments and guide students safely.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports, worksheets, SOPs, risk assessments, calibration/maintenance records, and controlled documentation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Excel, data recording, laboratory documentation, LMS/basic university systems, shared repositories, planning, teamwork, and problem-solving.​

Desirable Requirements
  • ​​Minimum BSc in Civil Engineering from a recognized/accredited higher education institution.
  • MSc in Civil Engineering is preferred, particularly in a specialization related to CEE laboratory areas.
  • Knowledge of relevant civil engineering laboratory standards, SOPs, and safety requirements is required.
  • Required university laboratory safety training and related inductions shall be completed upon appointment; relevant testing/safety certifications are preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience in civil engineering laboratories, preferably in teaching and research support.
  • ​Priority to UAE Nationals.​
