Job Purpose

​​The Integrated Water Processing Technologies research group is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with strong expertise in sustainable water and wastewater treatment technologies, desalination, resource recovery, and integrated/hybrid process development. The ideal candidate should have technical experience in at least one of the following areas: membrane separation, filtration, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, desalination, wastewater recycling, or recovery of valuable resources such as minerals and nutrients from wastewater streams.

In addition to strong experimental or process engineering skills, the candidate must demonstrate excellent capability in mathematical modelling, process simulation, data analytics, optimization, and machine learning. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, integration, and optimization of advanced water treatment and desalination technologies with the aim of reducing energy consumption, minimizing environmental impact, improving water quality, and supporting circular economy applications. Candidates with interdisciplinary research experience, strong publication records, and the ability to work across experimental and computational domains are particularly encouraged to apply.​

Applicants must have a PhD degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering or related fields from a reputable university and adequate research experience demonstrated by publications in high impact reputable journals.

Main accountabilities & expectations

  • Conduct high-quality research in sustainable water and wastewater treatment, desalination, recycling, and resource recovery, with emphasis on advanced separation and integrated treatment technologies.
  • Develop, evaluate, and optimize technologies such as membrane processes, filtration, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, hybrid treatment systems, and desalination-related processes.
  • Apply mathematical modelling, process simulation, optimization, data analytics, and machine learning tools to improve process performance, predict system behavior, and support technology design and scale-up.
  • Design and conduct laboratory and/or pilot-scale experiments related to contaminant removal, energy reduction, resource recovery, and process integration.
  • Analyze experimental and computational data, interpret results critically, and translate findings into practical recommendations for sustainable water treatment applications.
  • Contribute to the development of integrated and hybrid water treatment systems that reduce energy consumption, minimize environmental impact, and support circular economy objectives.
  • Prepare high-quality journal papers, conference papers, technical reports, research proposals, and project deliverables.
  • Support the preparation of competitive research grant applications and contribute to identifying new research opportunities and collaborations.
  • Assist in supervising graduate and undergraduate students, including guiding research methodology, experimental design, modelling work, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary researchers, industry partners, and external stakeholders working in water treatment, desalination, environmental engineering, and sustainability.
  • Maintain safe, ethical, and professional research practices, including proper laboratory management, data documentation, and compliance with institutional health and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to the visibility and impact of the research group through publications, presentations, workshops, stakeholder engagement, and participation in national and international research networks.

  • Extensive technical expertise in water treatment and desalination technologies.
  • Advanced proficiency in modeling and simulation, with the ability to integrate experimental and computational research methodologies.
  • Proficiency in machine learning techniques and data analytics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively present research findings and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of multidisciplinary and collaborative research teams. ​
