Department Research Institute of Medical and Health Sciences
Job Purpose

The Research Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (RIMHS) is seeking to hire a Flow Cytometry/Microscopy Imaging Assistant Researcher. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art flow cytometers, cell sorters, and confocal microscopy systems. This role provides essential technical and scientific expertise to a diverse user base (including faculty, researchers, postdocs, and students) to support their research needs, from experimental design to data analysis. The specialist will collaborate with researchers to develop, evaluate, and optimize new techniques and analytical workflows, such as high-parameter immunophenotyping, cell sorting, spectral flow, confocal microscopy and live-cell imaging. Hands on experience evidenced by educational background and publications in leading journals is necessary. Transcripts must be submitted along the CV in one document.

Main accountabilities & expectations

1) Manage, operate, and perform routine and preventive maintenance, calibration and quality control on all facility instrumentation, including multi-parameter flow analyzers, high-speed cell sorters, confocal, and wide-field microscopes
2) Diagnose faults, troubleshoot problems, and coordinate instrument repairs with engineers and service personnel
3) Provide extensive one-on-one and group training to new and existing users on instrument operation, sample preparation, and relevant software
4) Consult with users on experimental design, panel design (for flow cytometry), data acquisition, fluorophore selection, gating strategies and interpretation of results
5) Collaborate with researchers and the facility manager to develop, evaluate, and
optimize new techniques and analytical workflows, such as high-parameter immunophenotyping, spectral flow cytometry, 4-way/single cell sorting and live-cell imaging

6) Contribute to the well-organized functioning of the laboratory and assist in maintaining the stock levels by purchasing consumables and supplies in consultation with other members of the facility

7) Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures
(SOPs) for the facility
8) Provide support and training for data analysis using common software packages
(e.g., FlowJo, FCS Express, ImageJ)
9) Ensure proper data backup, archiving, instrument booking schedules and management
procedures are followed
10) Assist in general lab organization, managing stock levels, ordering consumables
and supplies, and tracking service contracts
11) Ensure compliance with institutional safety policies and good working practices
(such as biosafety levels)

Required Skills
  • Proven ability to quickly absorb technical information and troubleshoot complex instrumentation, work flows and software problems
  • Grounding in theoretical and practical experience with flow cytometry (sorting and analysis) and advanced microscopy techniques
  • Developing assays to run on the FACS machine including cell cycle, apoptosis, protein expression, and protein sequencing assays
  • Demonstrated ability in the interpretation and evaluation of cytometry data: experience with manual and automated data analysis strategies and common analysis software packages (such as FlowJo, FCS Express etc.)
  • Knowledge of z-stacking in brightfield and fluorescent microscopy
  • Basic knowledge in the use of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision in microscopy
  • Demonstrated experience in training, mentoring, and supporting researchers in a multidisciplinary academic or biomedical research environment
  • Excellent communication skills, strong service-oriented mentality, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
  • Previous experience working in a multi-user flow cytometry facility operating BD FACSAriaIII Fusion, BD LSRFortessa, MACSQuant® Analyzers, or equivalent high-end flow cytometry platforms.
  • Evidence of scientific productivity through high impact peer-reviewed publications and collaborative multidisciplinary research.
  • Writing software in R, Python or C++ to analyse Flow Cytometry or microscopy data

Desirable Requirements

  • A minimum of PhD degree in a relevant biomedical field (e.g., immunology, cell biology, biochemistry)
  • Hands-on laboratory experience, in a core facility or multi-user environment.
  • 7+ years of advanced hands-on flow cytometry experience, including independent cell sorting
