Job Purpose

As a Laboratory Support Engineer for the Department of Architectural Engineering you are requested to provide advanced technical and laboratory support for the Department's undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and innovation activities. The role supports the successful delivery of the bachelor’s program, four master’s programs, and the Ph.D. in Science and Technology for Heritage Conservation and Management by ensuring the effective operation, maintenance, and continuous development of specialized laboratories, digital fabrication facilities, design studios, and advanced architectural engineering software.

Working closely with faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, the engineer supports laboratory-based teaching, research projects, thesis work, and technical operations while ensuring compliance with safety standards and best practices. The position also contributes to the Department's strategic growth by strengthening its research capabilities, supporting accreditation requirements, introducing emerging technologies, and ensuring that laboratory resources meet the evolving needs of a research-intensive academic environment.


Main accountabilities & expectations

  • Provide advanced technical and laboratory support for undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and innovation activities within the Department of Architectural Engineering.
  • Manage the operation, maintenance, calibration, and continuous improvement of specialized laboratories, design studios, digital fabrication facilities, and technical equipment.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot architectural engineering software, including CAD, BIM, visualization, simulation, AI, and digital fabrication applications, while ensuring compliance with licensing requirements.
  • Support faculty members and students during laboratory sessions, design studios, thesis and dissertation research, capstone projects, design juries, and research activities by providing expert technical guidance.
  • Coordinate laboratory planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and technical support for academic activities, exhibitions, outreach events, and departmental initiatives.
  • Monitor laboratory safety, equipment performance, inventories, software licenses, and maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with university policies and industry best practices.
  • Assist in planning laboratory budgets and procurement of equipment, software, and consumables to support the Department's academic and research priorities.
  • Coordinate effectively with the College of Engineering and relevant University units to optimize laboratory resources, technical infrastructure, and operational efficiency.
  • Contributes to the implementation of new technologies, continuous laboratory enhancement, accreditation requirements, and the successful delivery of the Department's undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, laboratory records, and the Department's digital technical resources, including relevant website content.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair in support of the Department's academic, research, and strategic objectives.
  • Ensure the continuous availability, reliability, and effective operation of all Architectural Engineering laboratories, design studios, digital fabrication facilities, and specialized technical equipment.
  • Provide timely, high-quality technical support for undergraduate and graduate teaching, research activities, thesis/dissertation projects, and faculty research.
  • Maintain full operational readiness, compliance, and licensing of all laboratory equipment, software, and digital infrastructure in accordance with university policies and industry standards.
  • Achieve high levels of faculty and student satisfaction through responsive, professional, and effective technical support services.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory health, safety, and risk management requirements while maintaining a safe and efficient learning and research environment.
  • Maintain accurate inventories, optimize laboratory resources, and support timely procurement, maintenance, and equipment upgrades.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of new technologies, laboratory enhancements, accreditation requirements, and the continuous development of the Department's teaching and research capabilities.
  • Foster effective collaboration with the College of Engineering and other University units to maximize resource utilization and operational excellence.
  • The successful candidate is expected to support a diverse range of specialized Architectural Engineering facilities, including digital fabrication and model-making laboratories, design studios, large-format plotting and printing facilities, and advanced design, Building Information Modeling (BIM), visualization, simulation, and AI-enabled design laboratories. The role also includes providing technical support for design juries, exhibitions, graduate research activities, and other academic events, while ensuring that all laboratory facilities, equipment, software, and digital resources remain fully operational, safe, and aligned with the Department's teaching, research, and strategic objectives.​


Required Skills
  • Experience managing specialized laboratories, technical infrastructure, laboratory equipment, software licensing, and digital resources.
  • Advanced proficiency in architectural engineering software and digital technologies, including CAD, BIM, visualization, simulation, AI-enabled design tools, and digital fabrication platforms.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty members, researchers, students, and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken); Arabic is desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing specialized engineering laboratories, digital fabrication facilities, and advanced architectural engineering software. Strong technical capability in laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, digital technologies, and emerging tools that support teaching and research.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with faculty members, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students. Proven organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic academic environment.
  • Proactive, dependable, adaptable, detail-oriented, and committed to excellence. Demonstrates initiative, professionalism, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to supporting high-quality teaching, research, innovation, and continuous improvement.​
  • Experience supporting design studios, graduate research, thesis/dissertation projects, and interdisciplinary research activities is highly desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory safety, procurement, inventory management, accreditation requirements, and continuous laboratory improvement.
  • Willingness to support undergraduate and graduate laboratories, research activities, exhibitions, outreach initiatives, and departmental events, with flexibility to meet academic and operational requirements when needed.
Desirable Requirements

 Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline.
​ Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in laboratory management, technical support, architectural engineering, research laboratories, or higher education, with demonstrated experience supporting undergraduate and graduate teaching and research.
