Laboratory Engineer

Job Purpose

​The Laboratory Engineer plays a vital role in supporting the College's educational and research mission by ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of its laboratories. This position involves providing technical expertise, maintaining equipment, assisting students and faculty, and upholding stringent safety standards. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with a strong technical background and a passion for fostering a positive learning environment.​

Main accountabilities & expectations
  • ​Review and understand all relevant policies and procedures in order to be able to carry out daily work tasks as expected, and answer all stakeholder inquiries, clarifications, or any assistance related accurately and efficiently.
  •  Provide technical support to students and instructors on lab hardware, software, peripherals, and mixed lab facilities during experiments.
  • Assist and support senior students with their final graduation projects.
  • Guide students in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data and writing technical reports.
  •  Manage all lab-related activities, processes, and procedures.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, troubleshoot, and maintain lab software, hardware, and peripheral devices, ensuring compliance with licensing agreements and copyright legislation.
  • Supervise periodic upgrades, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Ensure the accurate installation and proper operation of new equipment and experimental units.
  • Maintain lab equipment through troubleshooting and repair, ensuring continuous performance and adherence to safety standards, including for specialized equipment like nuclear devices (if applicable).
  • Manage and supervise lab facilities, ensuring equipment and machines are in good working order, and recommend improvements for accuracy and reliability.
  • Develop and maintain experiment manuals and lab safety plans, incorporating information from previous experiments to ensure high safety levels.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety standards and protocols in all labs, and implement safety training programs for faculty and students.
  • Supervise lab sessions, lab examinations and assist in grading student lab reports.
  • Maintain and update student records related to lab work.
  • Assist faculty members in various course activities, including practical classes, student assignments, grading, attendance, and exam invigilation.
  • Maintain and update the laboratory inventory by requesting equipment, consumables, and furniture according to specifications.
  • Participate in related projects that help support and improve the college/department and the University in general, and be an active member of the project team, ensuring that all assigned tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Required Skills
  • ​Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Excellent working knowledge of personal computer applications with an emphasis on MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • Familiarity with necessary programs and/or computer software.
  • Good experience using relevant laboratory equipment, testing, troubleshooting, calibration and operation techniques.
  • Good project and time management skills.

Desirable Requirements
  • ​Minimum of bachelor’s degree in a relevant Engineering specialization.
  •  2-4 years of UAE experience in a similar role, preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Priority is to UAE Nationals.
